NSMB reviews the Volt Carbon, crown jewel of WTB’s revamped 2015 saddle family

After much anticipation, WTB has redesigned its lineup of saddles for 2015. The saddle line now offers multiple widths, while streamlining the range and standardizing construction across the line.

The stitching and embroidered logos of previous WTB saddles have been removed and the new line includes a smooth microfiber cover, with added texture for grip. All saddles in the family are black, with key colour accents to differentiate the Carbon, Team, Pro, Race, and Comp models.

wtb carbon volt nsmbVolt and Rocket models now also come in a variety of widths, offering 135mm, 142mm, and 150mm-wide models.

NSMB tested WTB’s ‘most bling’ carbon iteration of the much-loved Volt, which tips the scales at a road-bike worthy 159g.

Excerpts from NSMB:

“[W]hile being damned light this saddle doesn’t appear to be a delicate flower. The carbon rails are a chunky 7mm wide and 9mm deep and there is no rider weight limit on this saddle. Each corner is protected with a tough abrasion-resistant material and it looks like it will stand up to the usual abuse that a mountain bike saddle has to endure.

I like the dropped nose on the Volt. It means that you can move your weight forward on the bike for climbs without feeling like you are stabbing something blunt where it shouldn’t be (unless you like that kind of thing) and it seems to prevent my shorts snagging up on it as often. I like the kicked up tail as it gives me something to push against when I’m getting the power down. The DNA padding is firm and supportive, achieving that baby bear level of just right-ness, not too much, not too little.”

The Volt is available in the following models: Comp (MSRP $49.99 CAD), Race ($75.99 CAD), Pro ($114.99 CAD), Team ($161.99 CAD), and 135mm wide Carbon ($315.99 CAD) – weights are dependent on the model construction and width.
