The new 3T Strada Aero will soon be available in Canada, and this new Aero road bike is certainly turning some heads. The unique frame design is one of the most aerodynamic available- and it has clearance for 28C tires! 3T’s design goal with the Strada Aero was real world aerodynamics at realistic speeds, and the reviews are in: 3T succeeded!
David Arthur of road.cc tested the 3T Strada Aero on his bumpy, slippery and windy home roads in the UK. The Strada Aero exceeded his expectations in every category- providing the comfort of an endurance bike with the speed of a race bike.
“I was left with the overwhelming impression that this is one of the most exciting road bikes available right now.”
-David Arthur, road.cc
The 3T Strada Aero is designed around a single front chainring and an 11-speed cassette. 3T’s thinking is that despite the many aero road bike developments of recent years, the drivetrain was never tackled. A bike’s bottom bracket creates eddies and vortexes which increase drag; the frame, crank, chainrings, front derailleur, water bottles and rider’s legs leaving little room for the air to pass through. A single ring drivetrain reduces both material weight and frontal area, allowing unobstructed airflow. A single ring also allows the seat tube to be designed to route air around the rear wheel, further reducing drag.
“It’s designed around wide tyres because they are fast and comfortable, and the rest of the bike is designed to be as aerodynamic as possible. Going with disc brakes has freed up key parts of the frame and fork to be optimized for aerodynamics…The new 3T Strada might have the most radical appearance of any road bike on the market right now, but there’s nothing outlandishly crazy about its performance.”
-David Arthur, road.cc
The bold looks of the 3T Strada Aero are just a hint of how revolutionary the design actually is. When the rubber meets the road, this new aero road platform proves itself to excel in all categories. Just like the Exploro frameset released previously, 3T is setting the bar high for just what a road bike is capable of. The test team at road.cc certainly seems to think so!
“And could I find a flaw? Nope. There was no ‘nice bike, but…’ moment during my four weeks riding the bike.”
