LTP Rider’s Guide // Destination: Vancouver Island

Live to Play Sports sales reps spend their days travelling between bike shops in their territories, and helping support them in bringing the best products in the bike industry to customers all over North America. While their work isn’t always easy, it does provide the opportunity to ride a bunch of really cool bikes across a wide variety of terrain, often led by locals who know the routes best.

Reps have plenty of first-hand experience of different riding areas, bike setups, components and gear, and it’s always great to tap into that knowledge when planning a big purchase or adventure.

Steve Pukesh has been with Norco and LTP Sports for 20 years now, servicing Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland of British Columbia. He’s an avid mountain biker and road rider, and is always happy to join in on a shop ride after work.

Vancouver Island is known for it’s cycling-friendly culture, and for it’s density of bike shops, the bulk of which are located in Victoria, on the Islands southern tip. The riding areas around Victoria are understandably well-frequented, meaning that you’re always likely to run into a friend on the trails. Steve’s favorite riding area while he’s in town is Durrance Lake, about 20 minutes from downtown Victoria. The riding here is flowier and smoother than much of the South Island, and makes for great new-school climbing and descending.

To ensure he has the most possible fun on his rides, while being able to keep up to the energetic locals he rides with, Steve packs his Norco Optic C9.1 most frequently when he travels. He’s made a few changes to the stock build including adding in Crank Brothers Candy 3 Pedals, a WTB Volt Team Saddle, Ergon GE 1 grips, and a tubeless set up on the Nobby Nic 2.3 tires.  All these items add a bit more comfort and control to Steve’s ride. He rounds out his set up with IXS BC Gloves, and IXS Trail RS Evo Helmet, IXS Sever Shorts and hauls his water, tools, and “other stuff”  in an Ergon BX 3 Pack.

When he’s road riding, Steve always packs his carbon Valence Ultegra Disc bike and rides with Endura’s FS 260 Pro Bib Shorts and Pro SL Jersey to keep him dry and comfortable.  Since he’s a BC rep, his Endura Adrenalin packable waterproof jacket is always tucked away and close-by in case of a rain shower or two.

It’s hard to beat a post-ride beer with friends. Whenever he’s in Victoria, Steve will drop by the Fernwood Inn for a post-ride bevvy and some carbo-loading in preparation for his next adventure.  Steve suggests a pint or two of Driftwood’s Fat Tug IPA and an order of the hot wings (the best on Vancouver Island in his opinion)

If you see Steve on your home trails, make sure to say hi, he’s always happy to share stories about his latest adventures (and we hear he often travels with a well-stocked cooler). As you might have guessed, Steve’s kit can be found through your local LTP Sports dealer; drop on by to check these items out!
