As a result of quality monitoring and testing, Yakima has identified a limited run of Q-Tower Roof Racks with a manufacturing defect that relates to motor vehicle safety and are issuing a recall.
The Crossbar Clamping Wedges installed on Q-Tower Roof Racks were sold in Canada and the US between February 15, 2015 and May 26, 2105.
Certain Q-Tower Roof Racks may not meet minimum clamping requirements as specified in Yakima’s technical documentation. This poor fit could result in the clamping wedges sliding on the crossbars during installation, and a loose fit on the vehicle causing rattling noises when the rack is in use. A compromised fit could result in rack ejection, causing a crash or personal injury to persons outside the vehicle.
Which Q-Towers are affected?
Q-Tower 4-pack (part # 8000124), 2-pack (part # 8000135) and Replacement (part # 8880047) with manufacturing date codes between 5026 and 5146. Date codes are stamped on the end panel of the product packaging.
The affected units can be identified by the distinguishing markings as shown below:

In the interest of ensuring absolute safety using the Q-Tower Roof Rack, Yakima is advising that consumers examine their racks immediately to determine if they have an affected unit.
If the Q-Tower Roof Rack has Crossbar Clamping Wedges without similar markings depicted as “Good” in the picture above, consumers are advised to remove the Q-Tower Roof Rack from their vehicle immediately and discontinue use until it can be upgraded with new Crossbar Clamping Wedges, to be provided by Yakima Products.
