The aggressive, shark-finned profile of Zipp’s new 858 NSW road bike wheels conjures up images of lithe and fast-moving predators, born to chase down prey with ease. A fair comparison, as the wheels are some of the most aerodynamically sound ever produced, with 7.5% gains in aerodynamics over their current market-leader, the 808. Speed requires more than aerodynamics though, and the 858’s deliver in the form of a decreased weight (1834 grams total), and increased stiffness over the 808 model. Rideability is the focus of the shark-fin profile though, and the technology that goes into that is worth investigating!<\/p>\n

Zipp’s NSW technology is the result of years of experience and wind-tunnel testing, and is an example of ‘bio-mimicry’- Zipp focused on natural phenomena seen in animals like humpback whales, and designed their wheels accordingly. Humpback whales’ fins are covered in small bumps which disrupt the water as it passes over them, allowing for tighter turns and makes the whales less susceptible to lateral currents.<\/p>\n

When this technology is applied to the Zipp 454 and 858 wheels, riders will experience increased aerodynamics, and will suffer less in cross-winds, as the high-profile rims allow laterally-moving air to more pass over them more easily. Lateral forces are reduced by as much as 34% over the 808 NSW wheels, meaning that riders can spend more time in an aerodynamic position, and less time worrying about crosswinds.<\/p>\n
